Taos, NEW Mexico that is. Not to be confused with Taxco, Mexico which is where all the gorgeous jewelry comes from.
Just a little about the area to orient you:
Taos is located about 1.5 hour north of Santa Fe, 2.5 hours north of Albuquerque. The town itself is rich in the history of its three cultures: Pueblo Indians, Spanish and Anglo. You could easily spend a week just getting to know the town itself; it is known for its art community, with many museums and galleries. Taos Pueblo is a must-see in order to understand the roots that go deep here. And it is a perfect base from which to explore the surrounding area: Abiquiu (Georgia O’Keeffe country), the High Road (Spanish colonial villages each with their own historic church), Taos Ski Valley (world class skiing or just beautiful scenery for non-skiers) to name a few.
And the food: should you decide to go, I can provide a list of places to experience fine, fine New Mexican food!!!
So the casita (little house) in Taos is a special get-away of mine. I’ve just spent the last 6 months there, part of the time with my husband in residence. He did some much-needed remodeling of the bathroom and kitchen. After that, I’ve been living there, enjoying its energy and slowly making it a comfortable little space. It’s definitely a work in progress, but now all the “essentials” are there. |
I’d like to make it available to friends and family for rental. If you’ve already been to Taos, it has probably piqued your interest and you want to see more. My casita is an excellent base from which to explore the town and the area. Here’s a little more information about (let’s just call it for now)
Casita Miche

- It’s located approximately 3-4 blocks’ distance from Taos Plaza, easily walked in under 10 minutes.
- But it’s also located ON La Loma Plaza, which pre-dates Taos Plaza. La Loma Plaza has a small, central area that’s maintained by the Town of Taos (complete with a plaque telling about its history), a couple of fruit trees, a few benches and is tucked away in the Historic District of La Loma – the locals always know where you’re talking about, but newcomers have to have directions. There are about 10-12 houses around the Plaza, the road is gravel and the neighbors are all great.
- At one of the two entrances to La Loma Plaza is San Antonio de Padua chapel which is adorable and open only once a year in June on its Feast Day.
- The casita itself: it’s a free-standing 800 sq. ft. house that is surrounded by a latilla (coyote) fence. There’s a small yard which has consumed a lot of my time this Summer; I’ve only just gotten started!
- The layout is a combination of studio/one-bedroom with the bed(room) open to the living room which is where one enters. There’s also a dining room, kitchen and bathroom. It has only a queen-size bed – perfect for a single person or a couple.
- Both the bathroom and kitchen have been refurbished, using travertine tile; the bathroom has an old clawfoot tub and a small shower. There is a washer/dryer unit in the bathroom. Good storage, too.
- The casita is meant to be a quiet get-away . . . meaning erratic wi-fi connection, no phone and no TV. Truly peaceful!
